R.J. Hartman owns and operates Treasure Cove Divers in Westfield, New Jersey. Treasure Cove Divers is a full service dive and retail center providing diver education and diving opportunities for every level, from Basic Open Water Certification to Instructor. Treasure Cove Divers also offers technical diving instruction and opportunities. Treasure Cove has been in operation since 1990.
R.J. has been diving since 1995, when he was bitten by the diving bug on a family vacation to Cancun. His participation in a “Discover Scuba” program whet his appetite and he signed up for Treasure Cove Divers’ Open Water Certification program as soon as he returned home. R.J. continued his dive education, becoming a certified Scuba Instructor in 1999. Although R.J. worked in the corporate world during the week, he worked part-time as a scuba technician and instructor at Treasure Cove Divers. He also obtained his Technical and Trimix Diver certifications and began actively diving on the many ship wrecks that have found their final resting place on the ocean floor between New England and Florida.
In 2003, R.J. left the corporate world and took over ownership of Treasure Cove Divers from the original owners, Tom and Mary Ellen Doherty. In 2004, R.J. reached the level of Instructor Trainer with Scuba Schools International and in 2006 he attained one of the highest levels of instructor certification by becoming an Instructor Certifier with Scuba Schools International and a Trimix Instructor Trainer with the International Association of Nitrox and Technical Divers.
R.J. has over 3,000 scuba dives to date. He has dove and led expeditions to exotic locations all over the world, including Australia, Bali, Belize, Bonaire, Cayman Islands, Costa Rica, Curacao, the Galapagos Islands, Honduras, Truk Lagoon, Saba, St. Kitts and many other destinations around the world.. He also runs charters to the many shipwrecks off of the Coast of New York and New Jersey and has run technical expeditions to the famed sunken luxury liner, the Andrea Doria, as well as some of the other deep shipwrecks in New Jersey including the SS Carolina, U-869, Submarine S-5, E.M. Clark and many more.
R.J. currently sits on the Retail Advisory Board for Scuba Schools International (“SSI”) and is one of a few selected dive center owner/operators to provide input and guidance to SSI’s headquarters.
